Come and See: The Invitation Still Stands
By Lindsay Few
Last Sunday’s message was from John 1:35-51. The passage starts with John the Baptist and two of his disciples. Seeing Jesus, John said “Look, the Lamb of God!” Once they heard this, the two disciples followed Jesus as he went (v 35).
John’s ministry centered around preparing for the Messiah, so his disciples were already on the lookout for Jesus. Who in your life points to Jesus? Who are you pointing toward Jesus? When we are actively looking for Jesus, we are a lot more likely to find Him.
As they followed Jesus, “Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” (v 37).
Imagine him speaking those words to you. How would you answer Him? The disciples answered that they wanted to see where he was staying. “Come and see,” he told them.
Immediately as they began to follow Jesus, the disciples invited their family and friends to come too. A genuine encounter with Jesus affects not only each of us, but those around us. “Come and see,” said Philip (V 46) .
Now we see that as Philip has followed Jesus, he has adopted the language Jesus used: “Come see.” An invitation to actively follow. The idea of discipleship is not for the just spiritually elite or the highly motivated; anyone following Jesus is a disciple. The entire process begins with - and is sustained by - His grace.
“Follow me.”
“Come and see.”
By grace, His invitation still stands.
Where are you in the journey of discipleship? Where do you want to be? Jesus has invited you to a life-long journey, started and sustained by His grace. What do you want from Jesus today?
